Since 2024 we’ve been on the hunt: the search for the perfect pairing with New Dawn whiskeys, one cigar and one or two pours at a time. Some sticks were discovered from extensive research. Some were recommended by the New Dawn community. Every one of them got the same test: tasted against our 6-Year Cask Bourbon and our 10-Year Wheated Whiskey, and judged by how they play with and elevate New Dawn whiskeys.
So if you're shopping for the cigar lover in your life, start here. Ten cigars that earned their place, split down the middle: five that sing with the bourbon, five that were born for the wheated whiskey. Some come from Black-owned or woman-owned makers claiming space in a tradition African Americans helped build; some are prestige sticks with awards to their name. All of them make a gift that says, “I thought about you.” Pair any of them with a bottle of New Dawn — the 6-Year, the 10-Year — and you've given a whole evening, an experience not just a gift that will sit on a shelf forgotten.
A quick word on why our whiskeys hold up where so many don't. They're cask strength and additive-free. Nothing cut, nothing added back to soften or sweeten. When a cigar turns bold, a watered-down or doctored whiskey simply disappears underneath it. Ours don't. Got a lighter cigar? You can add an ice cube or make a cocktail to match the flavor. I'm an ecologist by training, so terroir is the language I think in, and what you taste here is grain, barrel, time, and place standing its ground against the smoke.

Five Cigars for New Dawn’s 6-Year Bourbon
Our flagship bourbon runs apricot, cherry, almond, and warm croissant over a velvet mouthfeel — a slow, approachable heat that fades to juicy fruit. It loves a cigar that leans dessert.
1. Definition Cigars — Conception
Pair it with NY 6-Year Bourbon
Black-owned out of Dallas, and a big, bold beauty that asks you to slow down and be present. This is the pick for the person who delights in finding standouts before anyone else — the friend who knew the restaurant before it had a line, who has a playlist of artists you’ll hear about next year. Give it to someone who loves a discovery and a story to tell with it, and who will happily sit with a cigar through every third. It’s a good choice, too, for anyone who wants to put their gift-giving behind Black-owned makers.
-
The first draw is spicy in all the best ways, then it mellows fast into rich toasted wood, roasted almonds, pecan, and whispers of rose and coconut. With the 6-Year it's a dance on the tongue — the bourbon's velvet meeting the cigar's spice like the best kind of choreography. It finished on pecan pie and my Aunt Audrey's kitchen.
2. Drunk Chicken — Original
Pair it with NY 6-Year Bourbon
Black woman-owned, decadent, and ranked among the best of its year. A gift of luxury, for the person who never settles for ordinary and treats a quiet evening as an occasion. Think of the one who dresses up for dinner at home, keeps the good chocolate hidden for herself, and believes a holiday should taste like one. It’s especially fitting for the woman in your life who smokes, or wants to start — a cigar made by a woman who knows exactly what a good one should be.
-
Cayenne, dark chocolate, walnut, and coffee, dense and creamy from the first draw. Pour the 6-Year and it transforms into rich, complex gingerbread — brown sugar, molasses, baked goods.
3. Tres Lindas — La Negrita Torpedo
Pair it with NY 6-Year Bourbon
Black woman-owned, and a lovely, fancy little luxury. Give this to the person who likes to feel elevated — the one who brings out the good glasses for company, keeps a proper tea collection, or puts a ritual around every small pleasure. It suits someone with a more refined palate who enjoys flavor journey, and it makes a gracious host or hostess gift for the friend who always sets a beautiful table.
-
Pepper, cocoa, espresso, and a hint of leather that turns, mid-smoke, to the finest black tea. Against the 6-Year's sweet citrus, the whole thing becomes an orange chocolate cake. High tea, anyone?
4. Plasencia — Alma Fuerte Sixto I
Pair it with NY 6-Year Bourbon
A pairing I keep coming back to — the prestige pick of the guide. Larger-gauge and made to be savored slowly, this is the gift for the connoisseur who has time to spend. Picture the person with a favorite chair on the porch, who’d rather have one exceptional cigar than a box of good ones. It’s the right choice for a milestone — a retirement, a promotion, a father or mentor you want to honor — and for the old fashioned devotee who’ll appreciate exactly what the pairing does.
-
Toasted sugar, baking spices, and a lovely smokiness like the very best barbecue. The 6-Year lifts its brown sugar, citrus, and cherry and nudges the sweetness up just enough to taste like the best old fashioned you've ever built.
5. Konscious — Lancero
Pair it with NY 6-Year Bourbon
Black-owned, and elegant as a magic wand. Slender, luxurious, and built to be enjoyed slowly over an hour — the unexpected and thoughtful gift for someone who knows their sticks. The lancero is a format the seasoned smoker appreciates and rarely buys for themselves, so it shows you paid attention. Give it to the friend whose humidor seems to have everything — this will still surprise them.
-
Cinnamon-raisin bread with a cayenne kick, walnut, and a distinct raisin-and-fig note wrapped in baking spice. The 6-Year's cherry and almond smooth that heat right into cinnamon-roll territory.
Five Cigars for New Dawn’s 10-Year Wheated Whiskey
Our wheated whiskey is the refined, subtle one — banana, chocolate, and cherry on the nose; ginger, orange, apricot, and peach with a whisper of rosemary and clove. Wheat rounds the edges; a decade adds depth. It's built for complexity and for the savory turn.
6. Tatuaje Miami — Gran Cojonu
Pair it with the 10-Year Wheated Whiskey
An excellent smoke, a 10/10 pairing for me. Increasing complexity, right to the finish — this is for the connoisseur who lives for the journey. Give it to the person who reads tasting notes for fun, keeps a journal of what they’ve smoked, or always wants to know what comes next. It rewards someone with an unhurried evening and a curious palate, and it’s a beautiful pick for the friend with a sweet tooth who appreciates dessert done right.
-
It opens sweet and floral into crème brûlée, then deepens through wheat bread, citrus, hazelnut, and rose. I thought the bourbon might win it — then I sipped the 10-year and knew. The wheated brings its chocolate and apricot to the cigar's floral sweetness and lands on my favorite thing: fine chocolate with candied violets. Increasing complexity, right to the finish.
7. E.P. Carrillo Pledge
Pair it with the 10-Year Wheated Whiskey
Pure pedigree, named the #1 cigar of its year, and one of the highest-rated ever. A gift with bragging rights built in. It’s the safe-but-impressive choice when you want to get it right — for a boss, a client, a father-in-law, or the cigar lover whose taste you’re not quite sure of. Medium-bodied and smooth, it welcomes a newer smoker while still earning a nod from the seasoned one, and it suits the person whose day doesn’t start without a good cup of coffee.
-
Smooth and medium-bodied with a hint of spice, vanilla, cream, and coffee, over a rare habano maduro wrapper grown in Connecticut. The 10-year amplifies its hazelnut and cocoa nib and brings out brown sugar and baked goods until the whole pairing drinks like an elevated latte — freshly roasted beans, hazelnuts, and the finest whiskey.
8. Drew Estate — Liga Privada H99 Super Ancho
Pair it with the 10-Year Wheated Whiskey
If you’re a good friend of mine, there's a fair chance you've already been gifted one of these because it's definitely one of my favorites. The cigar I gift. It’s for the people closest to you — the friend who’s been there through everything, the sibling you call first, the one who deserves your personal favorite rather than something off a list. Give it to someone who likes their flavors big and well-balanced.
-
Rich leather, molasses, vanilla, and brown sugar over deep tobacco, with a sweet Aleppo pepper and allspice. The 10-year elevates its bold sweetness and matches the spice with fruity-floral pink peppercorns and orange. Smooth, rich, and just spicy enough to tie it together.
9. Blackbird — Superb Habana
Pair it with the 10-Year Wheated Whiskey
Give this to someone who cooks, or who enjoys a meal with their smokes — the pitmaster with a smoker in the backyard, the friend who plans the tailgate menu, the one who’d rather have savory than sweet any day. It’s a natural for game days and cookouts, and pairs well with a gift for the grill.
-
Cocoa powder and black pepper ride a thick, rich smoke that turns, by the middle third, to brisket and Kansas City barbecue sauce, then closes richer, smokier, and meatier. The 10-year rises right up to meet the char where the bourbon would only sweeten it. Cigar, wheated pour, and a barbecue plate: that's the trifecta.
10. Definition Cigars — The Goods
Pair it with the 10-Year Wheated Whiskey
Black-owned, and fittingly for a gift guide the smoke I chose to close out 2025. beautiful way to end an evening, or a year. This is the gift for New Year’s Eve, a last-night-of-the-holidays toast, or anyone celebrating a chapter closing and a new one opening. It suits the person who marks milestones and likes a little ceremony in how they do it.
-
Rich almonds and cashews, buttery, with threads of peppercorn, a smooth maple-wood note, and a delicate hint of rose. The 10-year lifts clove, juicy orange, and cinnamon to the front and deepens the toasted nuts. Flavor-forward, just like the whiskey.
How to give it: Making a bottle and a few sticks a gift
A note on gifting cigars
Whether you're new to cigars or know them well, humidity is everything when you gift them. Pack them loose in a box or tie them with a ribbon, and they'll start drying out. A few weeks in a humidor can revive them if it hasn't been too long, but who wants to wait to enjoy a gift? Treat your gift with the respect it deserves and tuck the cigars into a Boveda Humidor Bag. At about $15, it's an easy way to make sure they arrive in perfect condition. The bag is reusable, so you can even check your New Dawn and cigar pairing off your list early.
What to choose?
We offered up five sticks for each whiskey because five sticks really allows someone to enjoy a pairing and moves this gift from one night of joy to several nights of self care and reflection. But since I don’t know your pockets you can always choose two or three sticks either of the same brand or different to create something unforgettable.
Bourbon lover? The 6-Year with the Conception, the Tres Lindas, and the Drunk Chicken Original — dessert in three acts. For the wheated drinker, the 10-Year with the Gran Cojonu and the Liga Privada H99. And if you're not sure which way they lean, both of our whiskeys make the whole guide open to them.
A Gift to Remember
There's a bigger sip underneath all of this, too. Several of these makers — Definition, Konscious, Tres Lindas, Drunk Chicken — are Black-owned or woman-owned, building in an industry that historically shut them out of owning anything. Pairing these creations with a bottle of Black-owned, woman-owned whiskey offers a thoughtful, meaningful way to share the warmth and extend a seat at the table this season. Two makers, one table. Bold by nature, built with care.
