Cigar Hunt: Definition Cigars Conception

Sometimes you’re in the mood for a big bold cigar. Something that you know is going to require you to take a moment to slow down. A cigar that brings back the magic of your ancestors and will leave you better than you started. Well, I was looking for such an experience to celebrate Black History Month and Definition Cigars’s Conception did not disappoint!

The first draw of Conception is spicy in all the best ways. Sort of like it’s telling you to buckle up and focus because this is an experience you need to be present for. Notes of rich toasted wood and roasted almonds and pecan sing a low bass line to start against that spice, but this dark beauty mellows very quickly. Soon the whole choir reaches its pinnacle becoming smooth, unctuous, and more nutty with whispers of rose, and I swear, coconut.

It should come as no surprise the Conception plays well with the 6-year. The rich velvet mouth feel of the bourbon and the prominent smooth flavors of this cigar come together for a dance on the tongue you just can’t ignore. It’s the best kind of choreography where the cigar and bourbon play off of each other's rich flavors and spices. Paired with the 10-year, Conception takes the center stage and the 10-year becomes mellow and dry. It wasn’t my favorite pairing - I like when the cigar and whiskey work together to make magic - but I suspect an old fashioned with the 10-year would bring things home.

Conception remains smooth and deeply nutty through the second and final third. I’ll admit, I got a bit nostalgic with memories of my dad cracking pecans and my Aunt Audrey's pecan pies as I finished this cigar.

This is a big robust cigar best enjoyed slowly to really relish the flavors of the pairing and make space for a connection with the ancestors.
