Roots of Resilience: Soil, Soul, and Sustainability

This Juneteenth, New Dawn Distilling celebrates “Generations of Excellence” and in the week of our second anniversary we honor "Roots of Resilience," and the profound connection between the land we cherish and the communities that have long served as its stewards. As it’s a topic near and dear to our founder’s heart, who better to profile when highlighting  Black excellence in environmental justice and the vital link between ecological health and social equity than Dr. Dawn O’Neal.

The Ecologist's Perspective

Our founder, Dr. Dawn O’Neal, brings a unique understanding to the whiskey industry rooted in her B.A. in Environmental Studies from Washington University in St. Louis and her Ph.D. in Ecology from Indiana University. Her distinguished career—spanning critical research on climate-driven migratory patterns and disease ecology in African Buffalo to a decade leading community-based environmental conservation efforts—infuses New Dawn with a rigorous systems-thinking framework.

For Dr. O’Neal, environmental sustainability is inseparable from social justice and has built a brand that refuses to separate the two. She understands that not only does ecological degradation disproportionately impact Black communities, but that change doesn’t happen without community involvement. In practice, this means fostering a genuine commitment to environmental conservation is impossible without simultaneously—or, in many cases, primarily—confronting the social justice challenges that burden a community.

Community in Action

New Dawn’s commitment to the earth is reflected in every bottle. However, New Dawn acknowledges that the current global landscape is defined by unprecedented events that demand our attention. We believe it is our responsibility to help address these urgent societal issues as a prerequisite to fulfilling our mission of resolving the environmental challenges inherent in the whiskey industry.

Which is why New Dawn is working with others in the hospitality industry to establish a movement that works against oppressive actions that dismantle equity and justice - the Right to Serve Movement. We seek to create a community and a structure that will empower hospitality venues, bartenders, and suppliers to work together to reclaim their historic role as safe, inclusive social institutions. The movement is being built on two foundational pillars: the Right to Refuse Service—allowing businesses to deny service to individuals associated with oppressive movements—and a Commitment to Community, which involves serving as designated Safe Havens during crises. The Movement will also provide a suite of support systems, including financial assistance (organized patronage days, legal funds), ethical and operational toolkits, and a Peer-to-Peer Mentorship Network to support individuals and businesses facing repercussions for taking a public stance.

To learn more, take a peek at our “manifesto.” We’re looking for feedback as well as champions to help us build a stronger movement with real impact.

We hope you will join us in the continued fight for environmental justice, social equity, and the reclamation of our community spaces as sanctuaries of progress. By supporting the Right to Serve Movement, we aren’t just crafting premium spirits; we are honoring a lineage of Black excellence and distilling a future where sustainability and justice are inseparable. Together, we can ensure our "Roots of Resilience" grow into a lasting legacy for generations to come.
