New Orleans in a Bottle: How Place and Ancestry Shape New Dawn Whiskey
People ask me a fair question, “Why does a whiskey brand whose grain grows in New York talk so much about New Orleans?” Place isn’t only where the grain is grown. It’s also where the soul is formed. Our terroir is in the Catskills. Our spirit, the other kind, is in New Orleans.
A city with ancestral ties
New Orleans is where my connection to the ancestors deepened, where ancestral reverence and guidance stopped being ideas and became practice. It’s not surprising given that it’s a city that never full separates the living from the dead, whether you’re thinking about its majestic cemeteries of raised graves, it’s history of ghosts and the supernatural, or its deep roots in hoodoo and voodoo. New Orleans is also the city that welcomed me just after my mother had passed. Setting foot in the city after her death felt liked being welcomed home. I attributed it to returning to the land of my family’s roots and that feeling of home, of family standing beside me, is what gave me a confidence to start New Dawn. It shaped my desire to bring forward a whiskey that spoke to my heritage and those who shaped me. And thus, a pour made with intention became an act of remembrance and veneration.
That’s not a concept I reach for in October and drop in November. It’s structural to the brand. When I say we make whiskey to be poured with intention, New Orleans is what taught me the intention was possible.
How it shows up in the whiskey
You feel it in the way we ask you to slow down with a cask strength pour, in the insistence that a drink can start conversations. The whiskey itself is honest — additive-free, full strength, made to be tasted attentively. The rituals around it, “pouring one out” for the ancestors or picking up the Mixologist’s Tarot deck for a reading, are what turn tasting into remembering.
