The Fat Hen: A Flavorful Powerhouse
The Fat Hen comes in two sizes: a short and chubby torpedo and a robust and elegant Gordo. I went with the Gordo because I was looking for a long moment of chill and because bigger is better, right? Crafted from a premium blend of tobacco leaves from Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic, and an Ecuadorian binder. Described as a medium to full-bodied powerhouse and featuring prominent tasting notes of earth, spice, and woodiness.
The first draw for me was pistachio and cream with finishing notes of peppercorns and tobacco. As I got into it, the body became creamier, reminiscent of a lightly sweetened salep. Salep is a flour meticulously crafted from the starchy tubers of wild orchids, an ancestral staple of the Middle East, Turkey, and the Balkans. Traditionally enjoyed as a rich, creamy, and decadent winter beverage, it is frequently adorned with a dusting of cinnamon and a sprinkle of nuts for a truly sophisticated profile. In that Fat Hen it was a welcome flavor of comfort after a long day.

With New Dawn’s bourbon notes of fresh-cut hay and whispers of orange come through in the Fat Hen that are truly delightful. I love a smoke that’s a journey and for a Mother’s Day moment this did not disappoint.
