BOURBON & BOOKS: Such a Fun Age

Kiley Reid’s Such a Fun Age is a narrative tangled in the messy intersections of race, class, and the performative nature of modern adulthood. While it ostensibly begins with a racially charged grocery store interaction that frankly has little bearing on the actual story, the book quickly shifts its lens toward a deeper, more frustrating exploration of boundaries—or the complete lack thereof—and the profound immaturity of its central characters.

At the heart of the conflict are two white characters, Alix and Kelly, who manipulate the young black woman at the center of their drama, Emira, to serve their own emotional needs. Kelly represents the classic "woke" mediocre white man, gaslighting the women around him with half-truths. Alix, on the other hand, exhibits a weird, boundary-crossing obsession with Emira, desperate for a friendship that Emira clearly does not desire. This dynamic transforms Emira’s experience into a "smoking gun" for the white characters to atone for their sins or prove their moral superiority, speaking volumes about how they prioritize their own narratives over her reality.

The theme of motherhood in the book is particularly fraught with this immaturity. Alix’s attempt to enforce a uniform on Emira—a polo shirt she offers "so Emira won’t get her clothes dirty"—becomes a symbolic flashpoint. While Alix never forces the polo, Emira’s spinelessness in wearing it and Kelly’s later demand that she quit her job over it highlights a world where no one has boundaries. The characters confuse professional structures with racial derogatory acts, illustrating a profound intellectual and emotional shallowness.

Reading about Emira can be a search for depth that often ends in boredom. She is young and clueless, seemingly unaware that she is half the problem in this ridiculous turn of events. In the end, Such a Fun Age is a study in how a lack of boundaries and a surfeit of immaturity can derail the very themes of motherhood and connection the characters claim to cherish.
