Bourbon and Books: The Passage
For the month of spooky we bring you a sci-fi thriller featuring vampires, The Passage.
We begin our tale in Bolivia with a bat-carried virus that enhances strength, agility, and immune systems in those who survive its initial onslaught. Fast forward and of course the US government is up to nefarious research using twelve prison inmates and a lone six year old girl... Pandemonium ensues, of course, and The Twelve rise against their captors and escape spreading their virus across the US - a virus that makes those who catch it blood sucking... well vampires. But not the Twlight kind - there is no falling in love with the undead here!
As the world closes its borders (I guess we've learned something from that last outbreak) the real story begins for those who've survived - starting 93 years into the future...
If you're into post apocalyptic tales crossed with science fiction and horror this book is for you. Seriously, Cronin does and excellent job of weaving a tale about vampires, or virals as they are called here, that is steeped in realism - from shady government tactics to create super soldiers to the amazing perseverance of humanity thanks to a dedicated few.
The first in a trilogy just be thankful you don't have to wait till next spooky season to see how it all ends. Pick up “The Twelve” and “City of Lights” at your favorite independent book dealer.
Keeping on theme, pairing this with the Forbidden Kiss - formerly the Vampire's Kiss. So grab your bottle of New Dawn today and prepare for some long dark nights.
Happy spooky season everybody!
