Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. understood that justice is interconnected—that the struggle for dignity does not stop at voting rights or fair wages, but extends to the conditions in which people live, work, and breathe. He spoke often about the moral cost of systems that deny entire communities the basic rights others take for granted.
Today, environmental inequity remains one of those injustices. Access to clean air, safe water, and healthy land is still shaped by race and zip code, leaving frontline communities to carry an unequal burden. At New Dawn, we believe environmental rights are human rights—and that honoring Dr. King’s legacy means acting on that belief, not just reflecting on it.
“Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.”
How New Dawn Is Taking Action
What: 10% of MLK Day sales donated
When: January 19 only
Where: Supporting Hip Hop Caucus
Why: Environmental justice, racial equity, frontline communities
Hip Hop Caucus centers environmental impact by organizing Black, Brown, and Indigenous communities to fight for racial, climate, and economic justice as interconnected struggles. Through its climate justice work, it mobilizes BIPOC communities for clean air and clean water, directly confronting pollution and petrochemical expansion that disproportionately harm communities of color. The organization also advances economic justice by pushing for a “Black and Green” future, linking climate solutions with wealth, health, and power for frontline neighborhoods. Across campaigns like Think 100% and Barz & Ballots, it uses culture, civic engagement, and narrative change to build grassroots power so communities of color can shape environmental policy and defend their freedom.
