Bourbon in Black

An exquisite evening unfolded at the Bourbon in Black whiskey tasting event last Thursday, featuring New Dawn’s 6 and 10 year whiskeys, expertly crafted cocktails, a premium cigar pairing, and a decadent charcuterie board. This event was a sensory delight, offering guests a unique and memorable experience.

While sipping Peach Bourbon Summer Fruit Smashes I shared New Dawn’s humble beginning before we jumped into a neat pour of the 6-year and the craftsmanship behind New Dawn’s whiskeys. We moved into discussions on the joys and challenges of starting a whiskey brand while Jeff, Bourbon in Black’s steward pour drams of the 10-year.

A special treat was when we welcomed our cigar sommelier James and Casa Carrillo Cigar’s regional manager Trey to the floor to introduce two tasty sticks for choosing. Each brought unique flavors and experiences in their own right pairing beautifully with either the 6 or the 10 year depending on the vibe you were looking for that night. I chose the Pledge Prequel paired with New Dawn’s 10-year at the recommendation of James, and was delighted with it’s smooth rich flavor and delicious notes of hazelnuts it brought out in the whiskey. Of course I’m going to do a full review for both so stay tuned!

Of course for me the highlight of the evening was getting to know the Bourbon in Black community not only because I love hearing feedback about my whiskeys but because of the brilliance that occurs whenever I get a chance to connect with directly with people. So many good ideas were birthed this evening including a Bourbon and Brunch, June 21 in Houston with THE Old fashioned Barrister; connections to several other tasting events to spread the word; ideas for a party when we release the rye; and introductions to people in distribution so I can get New Dawn in a store near you! And of course everyone loved the whiskey - even a few people who were new to the whiskey world.

A true boutique experience in every sense of the word, the Bourbon in Black event was a celebration of fine spirits, culinary artistry, and camaraderie and I can’t wait to head back to Dallas in the fall for our second event together. I’m thinking a full on dinner experience so that we can have even more time together exploring all that New Dawn and Dallas has to offer!
