Samhain lights a candle at the thinning of the year. Día de los Muertos builds an ofrenda heavy with marigolds, photographs, food, and drink. Many other cultures across Asia and the Black diaspora set year-round altars for remembrance of those who came before. Different names, same human tenderness — we do not want to forget, and we do not want to be forgotten.
This week, as those traditions gather, I want to offer a simple, reverent way to mark the season with a pour.
A note on respect
Ancestral reverence belongs to living traditions with real depth, and I hold them with care rather than costume. What I’m sharing here isn’t a claim on anyone’s specific practice — it’s the broader, shared act of remembrance, expressed the way I know how: with a considered glass and a toast to someone you hold dear.
A simple ancestor pour
Set out your best glass — the one you’d give a guest, because you are receiving one. Pour the 6-Year Cask Strength Bourbon at full strength; this is a night for the honest version, undiluted. Light a candle. Toast a name — a grandparent, a teacher, a friend, someone whose palate or presence shaped you. Set aside a second glass aside as an offering and leave it untouched through the evening.
Taking the practice deeper, you can set up an altar. A cloth as the base, setting the space with intention. Sweet smelling flowers or the favorite of your loved one to guide spirits home. A pungent bundle of sage, rosemary, or cedar to purify and clear heavy energy inviting clear communication or cinnamon to ground and evoke deep emotional resonance. Bites of favorite foods, fruits, and candy can also be offered to deepen spiritual connection and the invitation to sit and stay awhile.
However you choose to honor your ancestral roots, year-round with an altar or as the veil thins in October, remember the ancestors don’t ask for much other than remembrance and maybe the occasional gift to show you care.
